Pol Roger's 2002 Brut Vintage is showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of confit lemon and pear mingled with nuances of brioche, wheat toast, honeycomb and dried white flowers. Full-bodied, broad and textural, this is a rich, vinous Champagne that's ample and complex, underpinned by lively acids and concluding with a long, saline finish. Drinking range: 2015 - 2035 Rating: 95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jul 2020)

A fabulous vintage from Pol Roger. Tight and restrained at the moment, but with lots of autolytic notes, this is almost perfectly seamless, with tremendous length. The flavours just grow and grow as you hold it in the mouth showing tremendous promise. Cellar this wine and drink it from 2014 and for a decade thereafter.L&S (Feb 2012)
Mere words are not going to be able to express how I feel about this perfect, discreet, elegant champagne from the extremely good 2002 vintage. It seemed to stop a crowded room moving around me each time I have tasted it. I can feel the clichés descending: it’s Grace Kelly, an Aston Martin – oh look, champagnes this good don’t come along often Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Dec 2013)
How can you fail to be wowed by this stunning wine, from a stunning vintage and in tip-top condition? There's a fine-tuned floral perkiness to lift the house-style toastiness on the nose. The freshness is key to the palate's appeal, and shows a lightness of touch with the fine bubbles and yet a density of toastiness that renders the wine glossy yet somehow modest too. This will keep going for another 10 years at the very least. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (May 2013)
Champagne Pol Roger
Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
