As often here the colour is both very deep and somehow evolved - more garnet than blue. Very complete with the wood well-integrated with the firm but fine tannins - lovely depth of fruit - all in balance, rich and fresh. Firmly structured finish. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2005)

This classically-styled claret did not merit an outstanding rating because it lacks sufficient concentration to compete with the estate’s top vintages. However, it offers a dark ruby/plum color, nicely evolved notes of roasted herbs, sweet cherries and currants, and loamy earth, medium-weight, light to moderate tannin, and an elegant style. If it puts on weight over the next few years, it may deserve a slightly higher score. Anticipated maturity: now-2018. Rating: 89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jul 2010)
Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cherry, mocha, milk chocolate and iron. Chewy and on the dry side but stuffed with flavors of cherry, plum, iron, tobacco and mocha. This has fat and sweetness for the year, along with a suggestion of herbs. Finishes with dusty tannins and moderate lift. Rating: 89 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2007)
Deep purple. Very concentrated and yet fragrant too (this is usually contradictory). Lively, well balanced, very fine tannins, silky textured. Good balance with lots of fruit on the front palate. Quite integrated with minerality like Latour. Mid weight (lighter than Latour). Confident and vivacious without a hint of tartiness. Drink 2014-28 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2005)
Château Calon Ségur
St Estèphe Troisième cru 1855 Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost Grand Cru estate classified in 1855, sitting just north of the village of St Estèphe. It was once part, as the name suggests, of the vast holdings of the Ségur family, owners amongst others of Lafite and Latour. In the 18th Century, Nicolas-Alexandre Ségur is said to have remarked "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon", and the label bears his heart to this day. In the early years of the 19th Century, the then owner Etienne Dumoulin became interested in an underdeveloped part of the estate, which was cleared and planted with vines. Such was the quality that the rump of Calon-Ségur was sold off, and Etienne's new estate went on to become Château Montrose. Calon-Ségur came into the hands of the Gasqueton family in 1894, and it is still owned by the family. A solid performer, especially recently, the Grand Vin is made with a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (as high as 90% in some vintages). The vineyards are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the wines spend 18 months in wood. The second wine is Marquis de Calon.
