Wow! Tried at a recent Lea & Sandeman dinner, from decanter, this was truly lovely. This is a hugely credible example of where Bordeaux has got to over the last decade and a half in terms of value for money and ageability. All the right things have been done in the vineyard since Sylviane Garcin-Cathaird acquired Château Haut-Bergey in the 1990s. The result is a beautifully crafted wine that climbs inside your head and really forges a memory. Sweet cherry-scented nose and very subtly textured spicy, blackberry fruit on the mid palate. The finish is long with a few encores too. You then have to consider it is under £25 a bottle. An insanely obvious buy. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2017)

An opportunity to buy and enjoy, or give as a present, a mature but still thriving 13-year-old claret. Classically dry, elegant and savoury, with softly coating tannins, mellow fig and black berry fruit, spice and cigar-box flavours. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2017)

A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. It is not as big or forceful as the 2005 nor as structured as the 2006, but rather it is evolved, seductive, and ideal for drinking over the next 7-8 years. Rating: 90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jun 2007)

Château Haut Bergey

Château Haut Bergey dates back to the 15th century and was acquired by Sylviane Garcin-Cathaird in the early 1990's. The estate has been extensively renovated and the construction of three new chais were carried out to rehabilitate the domain. The 29 hectares of Haut Bergey are not all in production, 21 hectares are planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot while 3 hectares are planted with 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon. Grapes are harvested by hand, while the wine-making and ageing processes are carefully controlled by an on-site analysis laboratory.
