BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2005 Collemattoni

Grapes Sangiovese
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14.5%

A denser and fuller style (than Fuligni) with layers of richly textured fruit, very glossy, rich oak tannins, and above all beautifully balanced with a very long finish. This is a joy to drink immediately but will also evolve well over a decade and possibly more. L&S (Feb 2010)

Richly fruity and concentrated with perfumed-violet floral notes, ripe cherry fruit and biscuity sweet development. Delicious now, but substantial, structured and well-balanced enough to last the rest of the decade. The estate is very small estate, but it's definitely one to watch – and the prices are still reasonable. Rating: 92 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2012)

Perfumed, with leather and berry aromas that turn slightly floral. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fruity, clean finish. Delicious already. Drink now. Rating: 88 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Oct 2010)

Drink 2009-2016. Bright ruby. No Riserva (nor in 2002, 2003). Orange peel and concentration and meatiness. Very bold and attention grabbing, lots of tannins. Firm and clean and confident. Firm tannins. But lovely balance on the palate. Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2010)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
