The 2005 d'Aiguilhe races out of the glass with soaring aromatics and plenty of energy. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, spice and blood orange give the 2005 quite a bit of vibrancy. A sheen of new oak vanillin remains, but otherwise, the 2005 is very nicely done. It has certainly aged quite well. This is a terrific showing from Stephan von Neipperg Côtes de Castillon. Drinking range: 2021 - 2027 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2021)

(14.5% alcohol) Bright ruby-red. Almost candied sweetness to the aromas and flavors of pungent black fruits and minerals. Then wonderfully ripe, full and sweet in the mouth, with captivating freshness. The tannins arrive very late, allowing the fruit to expand and linger. We need great ripeness on this chalky site or else we get bad tannins, noted von Neipperg. One of the great values of the vintage: this opened at 13 euros. Rating: 91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2008)

Good medium ruby. Ripe but reticent nose dominated by coffee and oak spice. Then almost shockingly rich, sweet and deep, with strong dark berry flavors complemented by a minerally lead pencil quality. Chewy and large-scaled for a Cotes de Castillon wine, finishing with strong but ripe tannins and excellent palate coverage. (May/June 2007) Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (May 2007)

Château Canon La Gaffelière

Château Canon La Gaffelière started out life with two seperate names. It was known as Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière-Boitard in the 19th century. Skipping ahead to modern history, in 1969, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the Bordeaux wine estate in 1971. The von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Stephan von Neipperg manages the property as well as several other St. Emilion estates owned by the family. The Bordeaux wine property is located south of the St. Emilion village. It’s not far from La Gaffeliere. The terroir is sand and clay. The sandy topsoil adds more sand when you travel further from the slopes. The slope soil has a large concentration of clay. There is also a thick vein of clay in the subsoil, at a depth of between 70 and 150 cm.
