Wonderful inviting aromas of cherries, dried herbs and tar. Very dry, with mouthcoating tannins and intense, sweet fruit. Lovely balance, pure and delicious. Rating: 92 Matt Walls www.mattwalls.co.uk (Nov 2011)

Good medium red. Slightly reduced, musky aromas of raspberry, cherry, smoke, chocolate and minerals. Sweet, vibrant and taut; in fact, a bit youthfully imploded, with terrific pinot-like lift and minerality to its flavors of cherry, cola, flowers, leather and earth. At once sappy and elegant. Finishes very long, with noble tannins. Its firm acids and inner-mouth energy suggest that it will age well. Rating: 93 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jul 2011)

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, bold wine imbued with wild cherries, earthiness, tar, smoke and grilled herbs. This shows more of the rustic side of Sangiovese in its hearty personality, but there is more than enough substance in the fruit to balance some of the wine’s edgier qualities. Licorice, new leather and French oak linger on a round, harmonious finish that compensates for some of the wine’s small imperfections. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Drinking range: 2014 - 2024 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2011)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
