Blackcurrant tends to dominate the nose with behind it black cherry and bramble. The palate has power depth of flavour the richness on the mid palate helped by the dark, chocolate, coffee beans and liquorice. The tannins give structure but feel ripe and there is a lot of sweet fruit packing out the back palate. 2012-20 Rating: 94 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)
2012 Rating: Silver Medal International Wine Challenge 2015 (Feb 2013)
The flagship 2007 Peter Barlow is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon from vines planted in 1990. The wine was raised in 64% new oak, the remainder 2nd and 3rd fill. It has an intriguing bouquet of roasted herbs, tobacco and a touch of dark chocolate and good definition. The palate is very well balanced with ripe plum and black currant on the entry. The black fruit is interlaced with dried herbs and fresh tobacco with firm and grippy tannins. It displays impressive weight towards the bold, structured finish and this 2007 is only just beginning to show what it can do. Drink 2014-2022. Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2012)
Rustenberg
Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg's wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used: Rustenberg has a history of success with reds.
The viticulturist, Nico Walters, and his dedicated team have been working hard to rejuvenate their vineyards by planting virus-free vines imported from France. A small-scale nursery has been started for propagation, providing available rootstock for upgrading, replanting and experimentation. Controlled irrigation is used when necessary to alleviate stressed vines and maximise the quality of the grapes. All grapes are hand-harvested in the early mornings and all vineyard blocks vinified separately, then blended for added complexity.
