BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2008 Fuligni

Grapes Sangiovese Grosso
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
ABV 14%

Deemed to be a four star vintage in Montalcino and Roberto made no Riserva in 2008. This means all the top quality juice goes into the regular Brunello - which is sensational. For Fuligni this is quite a broad style, but is still beautifully elegant and has the trademark finesse we so love from this great estate. Intense notes of plum and cherry fruit and some leafy, tobacco spice. Delicious. L&S (May 2013)

Fuligni make brunello that is pleasing to the classicist. It’s an old estate worked within living memory by oxen, where the wines are aged in large-format Slavonian oak and take on the gentle mushroom, church incense, rose and cedar crenellations that show sangiovese at its best. 2008 was a good vintage but at Fuligni they chose not to make a reserve quality wine which means that all the best parcels of grapes are here in this standard Brunello and it shows. Strictly speaking, on the basis that it will continue to unfurl and unfold for a good few years more, it’s too early to drink this wine. But it’s certainly not too early to enjoy it, relishing the vigour of its youth even as it already has a scent of roasting chestnuts (the skins and the softer insides), wood smoke and autumn leaves. So buy a bottle now and throw a steak on the griddle or some small, sweet lamb cutlets into a frying pan. Better still, buy a case and have it both ways, young and old. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Oct 2014)

One of the clear highlights of the vintage, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with black cherries, violets, cloves, menthol, licorice and tar. The 2008 stands out for its impeccable balance and layered, highly expressive personality. A translucent, mid-weight, silky finish is totally striking. Once again, Fuligni made one of the more refined wines of the village. In 2008 there is no Riserva. All the best of the lots made it into the straight bottling. If I had to bet on a 2008 Brunello that might surprise on the upside in a few years Fuligni would be near or at the top of my list. 2013-2023 Rating: 92+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Nov 2013)

(14% alcohol): Bright red. Clean aromas of strawberry, flint and underbrush. Bright and lively in the mouth, with modest nuance to the flavors of red berries, flowers and herbs. Finishes with spicy tannins and good acid lift but only moderate concentration and length. I have always been a huge fan of Fuligni's rather understated style of Brunello, but this 2008 is almost too delicate and simple. Perhaps some bottle age will help it put on flesh; in that case my score will look ungenerous. Rating: 88 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2013)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
