CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE

2009 Tradition Domaine Giraud

Grapes Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Châteauneuf du Pape
ABV 15%

Smells of small berries with thick skins. Lots of tannin. Very sweet fruit, tastes like a pure Grenache, juicy, velvet soft and sweet. Really a 'gourmandise'. Very ripe, even a touch of overripe, but it remains fresh, gourmand, gorgeous. Long, long finish. L&S (May 2011)

(60% grenache, 25% syrah and 15% mourvedre; one-third of this wine was raised in barriques, the rest in concrete): Ruby-red. Red and dark berries on the nose, with smoke and licorice nuances adding complexity. Round and fleshy on the palate, with a touch of warmth to the ripe, open-knit cherry and blackberry flavors. Finishes with good power and lingering dark fruit qualities, but I'd like to have seen more vivacity and shape. Rating: 88 Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2012)

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (a blend and upbringing identical to the 2008) has a dark ruby/plum color, cuts a slightly broader swath across the palate than the 2008, and is perhaps at least a degree higher in alcohol. With its fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, it is already evolved and complex, but it should drink nicely for up to a decade. Rating: 89-91 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (May 2011)

Domaine Giraud

Owned by François and Marie Giraud the 19 hectare Domaine Giraud is now rated among the best producers in Châteauneuf du Pape. François is responsible for the vineyards and Marie for the vinification and together with Philippe Cambié, one of the Rhône's most exceptional consultant wine makers, they have come up with a string of excellent vintages. The 19 hectares are split between an 8 hectare plot in the 'Gallimardes' area in the south, which includes parcels of hundred-year old Grenache, and further sites in the Crau, the sandy soils near Château Rayas on the Pignan plateau, and the white rocky soils of the highest points of the appellation, and these too include vines over a hundred years old.
