Wild berries. It is 'fruitier' than the Echezeaux, and then surprises with the rounded suppleness of the mid-palate, as if the slight rigour has been sweetened. Mineral, a touch of salinity. Almost sweet and savoury. Top notes of eau de vie. Very ripe, very full with spicy depth too. Lively and exciting with lots going on. L&S (Dec 2012)

The 2011 Clos-Vougeot comes across as deep, powerful and also closed in on itself. Here the flavors are beautifully centered and polished throughout. Fine, crystalline tannins support the bright, delineated finish. The 2011 is a rare Clos Vougeot that is both finessed and powerful. The bright, saline finish is hard to resist. 2021-2041 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

Bright medium red. Dark currant and black cherry aromas are lifted by flowers, spices and stone. Juicy, firm and tightly wound, with lovely perfume to the flavors of red berries, cinnamon and cardamom. Boasts a firm acid/tannin spine without any hardness. Still youthfully withdrawn, even a tad dry, on the back end and in need of at least five years of cellaring. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2014)

(from a parcel situated by the Château at the top of the slope and just below the climat known as Le Musigni; on the old maps, it was designated as Montiotes Hautes). A ripe yet discreet and restrained cool red berry fruit nose also displays notes of warm earth, spice, plum and floral hints. There is excellent richness and overt power to the relatively refined medium weight plus flavors thanks to the fine grained tannins that coat the mouth on the explosively long finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort is clearly the best in show in 2011 as well as the most obviously structured. 2023+ Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2013)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
