DOW

2011

Origin Portugal, Port
ABV 20%

Wonderfully creamy seamless nose of rich black fruit and glinting highlights of crushed blackcurrant. Creamy with fine tannins in medium to full body. All of a piece, fine precise texture and very long. A touch of very dark mint chocolate. Beautiful balance and really rather gourmand. Rating: 95-95 L&S (May 2013)

The nose is firm quite austere with a mix of cassis and red cherry. The start of the palate feels fresh with more red fruits than black the fruit underpinned by fresh green figs. There are layers of flavour some bitter chocolate lots of complexity and depth rich cassis and black cherry at the back with a lovely long mineral driven finish. 2030--60 Rating: 97 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)

Powerful, refined and luscious, with a surplus of dark plum, kirsch and cassis flavors that are unctuous and long. Shows plenty of grip, presenting a long, full finish, filled with Asian spice and raspberry tart accents. Rich and chocolaty. One for the ages. Best from 2030 through 2060. Rating: 99 Kim Marcus, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2013)

The 2011 Dow Vintage Port was made from no less than 44 separate ferments from finest fruit sourced from Quinta do Bomfim (35% of the blend), Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira (42%) and the Santinho (14%) and Cerdeira (6%) estates. Just six of the best lots were used in the final blend, which consists of 40% Touriga Franca, 36% Touriga Naçional, 10% Sousão and 14% of old vine plantings. It has a beautiful, quite extravagant bouquet with copious black and red fruit, Indian spice, and hints of menthol and orange rind that unfold wonderfully in the glass. The palate is a sumptuous affair, one that is beautifully balanced with velvety smooth, plump tannins, copious black fruit with a harmonious, white pepper-tinged finish that is a decadent delight. This is one of the finest of the declarations of 2011 Vintage Ports, a sublime expression of the vintage you would be foolish not to buy. This is Dow at its best. 5,000 cases have been declared. Rating: 96-98 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com (May 2013)

This has grip. Full body, lightly sweet with chewy tannins and an intense finish. I really like the finish here. Lots of character of dark berries and dried fruits. Rose petal too. It lasts incredibly long. Extremely structured yet toned and balanced. Tannins are almost dusty in texture. Rating: 96-97 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (May 2013)

Tobacco nose and then the most extraordinary texture. So voluptuous and I could love it tonight! So appetising and beautifully balanced. Long. So complete. Tea leaves. So exciting. Such intensity than the tannins are barely perceptible. Lip smacking. 2023 - 2050. Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2013)
