Two parcels: younger vines in the 'Quartier de Nuits' and older vines in 'Les Rouges du Bas", higher up the slope, from whence the length and complexity. Like the Ruchottes, it's not so much about fruit. Serious and straight for an Echezeaux. There is an immediate charm in the mouthfilling richness, but also mineral earthy depth which adds power to the finish. L&S (Dec 2012)

Dark red cherry, plum, spices, menthol and licorice all flesh out in the 2011 Echézeaux, a powerful, incredibly inviting Burgundy loaded with class and personality. Layers of dark, deeply spiced fruit blossom in the glass as the 2011 shows off its pure volume. The Echézeaux boasts fabulous extract and serious concentration. This is a marvelous Burgundy built for the cellar. Today, the 2011 is every bit as magnificent as it was from barrel. 2021-2041 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2014)

(60% new oak): Bright, dark red. Less expressive on the nose than the Ruchottes, offering ripe red fruit and toasty oak aromas lifted by a whiff of orange rind. Broad, round and suave for the year but not yet filled in; currently showing more cardamom and licorice than primary fruit. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and very good spicy persistence. This needs time in the cellar. Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Mar 2014)

Good bright, full red. Perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry, tobacco, rose petal, minerals and smoked meat. Suave and silky in the mouth but a bit youthfully imploded, with well-integrated acidity giving shape to the middle palate. More savory and dry and less harmonious today than the Ruchottes but finishes long and pure, with sexy spice character and a firm tannic backbone for aging. Mostly from degenerating vines that produce tiny grapes in Les Rouges du Bas, the rest from Quartier de Nuits at the bottom of the slope. Rating: 91-94 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Feb 2013)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
