LADY MAY

2011 Grand Vin Glenelly Estate

Grapes Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin South Africa
ABV 14.5%

Mint, tobacco, cassis and plum fruit abound on the nose. The palate is sleek and ripe, good structure, rich tannins and a deep core of cassis and plum fruit, lovely complexing oak, then tobacco and coffee nuances on the long finish. This has a passing resemblance to Pichon as you might expect, but at nowhere near the price. Drinking range: 2017 - 2025 L&S (Dec 2016)

The 2011 Lady May is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot, matured in 100% new oak. This has a more refined, complex bouquet than the 2010, offering ample blackberry, graphite and cigar box aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin and a fine line of acidity. I like the cohesion of this Cabernet blend, and the grainy, tobacco- and black pepper-tinged finish that feels reassuringly classic in style. Very fine. Drinking range: 2018 - 2029 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2018)

This is a bold and powerful yet layered and nuanced wine, with hints of green peppercorn, tobacco leaf, cigar box and leather that add depth and interest to the cassis and brambly blackberry core. The gripping palate offers structured, mouthcoating tannins that are framed by ample acidity and ripe black berry tones. Notes of spicy black licorice and espresso unfold on the long finish. It's delicious now, but this will age beautifully through 2020. Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 93 The Wine Enthusiast www.winemag.com (Jun 2017)

Glenelly Estate

Glenelly Estate in the Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, is the home estate of May de Lencquesaing, previous owner of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Bordeaux. This is no retirement home, but an ambitious project to make serious wines in one of the Cape's most beautiful and best sited vineyard areas. May has recruited Luke O'Cuinneagain as winemaker, whose career includes Chateau Fieuzal, Angelus, Screaming Eagle and five years at Rustenberg before joining Glenelly. He is assisted by Adi Badenhost as consultant winemaker. There are three ranges of wine made at the estate. The 'Glass Collection'; premium varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. The 'Grand Vin': the signature blend of the estate, using Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 month in oak barrels. 'Lady May'; the flagship wine made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in new oak.
