BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2012 Collemattoni

EN PRIMEUR

Sumptuous nose of plum, dark cherry, liquorice and cedar. The palate is sleek with delicious ripe acid, meat, cherry, plum and liquorice, wood complexing the palate and nice drive of rich ripe tannin on the finish.L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino really packs a punch with an intense burst of cherry sauce, ground clove, allspice, ash and fresh tobacco leaves. It’s round and giving in nature, with a pleasant honeyed sweetness up front that evolves as it moves across the palate, displaying a sour twang of tart cranberry and spiced citrus. The tannins are fully resolved and, while there’s a slight tinge of heat that remains, it stays fresh and vividly fruity throughout, with a nuance of inner earth that hints at its maturity. Collectors should drink up, as this 2012 is showing beautifully today, but flirting on the edge of a downhill decline. Drinking range: 2022 - 2025 Rating: 90 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Effusively perfumed with heady notes of oak-spice and lavender accompanying ripe cherry fruit; a powerful style, with evident tannins, yet refined and well-managed, with plenty of ageing potential. Highly Recommended Drinking range: 2021 - 2032 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Nov 2017)

Bright red with ruby tinges. Musky red raspberry, mocha and violet on the nose. At once big and restrained, dense and rich, showcasing Collemattoni’s typical thick, strapping mouthfeel but also more lift and refinement than usual. Round and fairly large-scaled but with plenty of verve that will repay extended cellaring. Really classic Brunello. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 91+ Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Mar 2017)

This is very Burgundian in style, with effusive cherry, strawberry and floral aromas and flavors riding a supple texture until the characteristic Sangiovese tannins emerge on the finish. Elegant, complex and long overall. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 96 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2017)

Plenty of black-truffle and berry character on the nose. Full body, a silky texture and bright acidity follow through to a subtle and satisfying finish. Hints of orange peel make it all the more attractive. Drink or hold. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2017)

Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Firm and exciting nose with quite a bit of power behind it. Ripe palate with muscular tannins and really opens up on the palate. Deserves much more time Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2017)

This is a tiny seven hectare estate in San Angelo in Colle, on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Marcello Bucci, who studied oenology under Signora Fuligni (Roberto Fuligni's aunt), is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
