The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is finessed in the glass, perfumed with nuances of violet and rose, as hints of fresh plum and dried sage evolve over time. This floods the palate with textures like pure silk, washing masses of savory red berries and spices across a balanced core of saline-tinged acidity. A tart twang of sour cherry and hints of citrus electrify the finale, as smooth tannins add a gentle grip, and hints of licorice slowly taper off. The 2012 is a gentle giant with the balance to mature beautifully for years to come; but that said, there’s no shame in checking in on it now; just make sure to let it breathe to unlock its charming bouquet. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 97 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

Ripe, savory and richly flavorful with plenty of sun-dried tomatoes, tapenade, ripe cherries and walnuts. Full-bodied with round, ripe tannins. Salty freshness at the end. Long and delicious. Excellent energy for the vintage. Drink or hold. Drinking range: 2022 - Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2022)

Bright saturated red. Deep, pure aromas of raspberry, liquorice and minerals; a whiff of white pepper and aromatic herbs emerges with air. Sweet, dense, chewy and powerful, offering superb depth and nuance to the rich red cherry, liquorice and potpourri flavors. Tactile, serious and extremely long on the fine-grained, lifted finish. Yet another great wine from Fuligni, and a knockout Brunello Riserva. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 96+ Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2018)

This is bright, juicy and packed with cherry, strawberry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Linear in shape and tightly wound, yet very pure, with a long, detailed aftertaste that pulls all the elements together. Best from 2021 through 2040. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 98 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2018)

From the moment you put your nose into the bouquet, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gives off heat, ripe fruit and power. Brunello from this warm vintage tends to be bold, muscular and emphatic, and this wine definitely supports that claim. Black cherry, prune and plum at the core are surrounded by soft oak spice and cinnamon. The Fuligni winemaking team has done its best to tame the fruit (and allow for the more delicate aromas to emerge), but this wine moves toward the bigger side of the Brunello spectrum nonetheless. Rating: 92 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2018)

Mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Alluring cherry nose with minerally notes. Gorgeous intensity and length, the fruit streamlined with sappy acidity and fine, long tannins. Lots of class. Will give lots of pleasure for years to come. Drinking range: 2022 - 2034 Rating: 18 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
