2012 Vigna Fontelontano Riserva Collemattoni

Grapes Sangiovese
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
Sub-district Brunello di Montalcino
Classification Riserva
ABV 13.5%

The 2012 'straight Brunello' was a runaway success for Marcello winning fabulous international plaudits - and this Riserva is a gem. In the same mould, deep, richly weighted with dark cherry fruit and lovely plum skin. Chock full of spice, cocoa and cigar box toast notes too. Intense, full on and loaded with promise. This will need time - but will be worth the wait. Great value Riserva which will be a joy to open in 7 to 10 years time. L&S (Feb 2018)

Pulling away from the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Fontelontano is an exercise in futility. This captivates with a bouquet of dried cherries, old cedar spice box, cinnamon, cloves, dusty rose and leather that keeps me at the edge of the glass. It washes across the palate like pure silk, yet with a core of zesty acidity that adds lift and enlivens the mineral-tinged red berries and sweet spices within. This totally seductive 2012 tapers off long and staining with a lingering inner sweetness and a subtle coating of nicely refined tannin, as nuances of licorice and raspberry linger. Wow. Fontelontano, a half-hectare vineyard near the town of Sant’Angelo in Colle, really shows its pedigree through this full-throttle yet totally stunning Riserva. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 96 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jan 2023)

There’s a lovely interplay of dried redcurrants, dried red cherries, forest floor and underbrush, and even morello cherries and meat. Full-bodied and intense but refined and very elegant with lovely tension and a dialed-in fruit and acid balance. Drink in 2022. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)

Saturated flavors of cherry and plum mesh nicely with the dense tannins in this intense, energetic red. Balanced, if a bit angular now, with the component parts needing time to integrate. Finishes with a firm grip and lingering tobacco and mineral accents. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 96 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2018)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
