There is some vanillary oak that lends the Grand Corbin-Despagne a nice lift on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine balance, although it is a little conservative towards the clean, fresh finish. Fine. Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2013)

This wine often tends to be rustic and masculine, but the 2012 is civilized. Sweeter tannin, a softer, more expansive mouthfeel and abundant concentration have resulted in a sleeper of the vintage. The wine’s dark purple color is accompanied by lots of incense, blueberry, black raspberry and crushed rock-like notes. Drink this beauty over the next decade. 2013 - 2023 Rating: 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2013)

A solid, grippy style, with briar, blackberry and steeped black currant fruit lined with graphite and black licorice on the finish. Rating: 88-91 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2013)

Château Grand Corbin-Despagne

Unusual in Bordeaux is to find the family that gave an estate its name – or, in this case, part of its name – still in situ but, at Château Grand Corbin-Despagne, François Despagne is the latest in a line of Despagnes going back to Louis Despagne who purchased some vines here in 1812. The Corbin estate had been, in antiquity, a vast estate to rival neighbouring Château Figeac and counted the Black Prince amongst its owners, but was divided and sub-divided over the years such that several estates have Corbin in their name. The Despagne family gradually accumulated more vineyard and, by 1852, it had reached its current 26ha. The vineyards are in the north-west corner of the St Emilion appellation, some distance from most of the famous châteaux, but near to Château Cheval Blanc. They are planted to 75% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc with the remaining 1% being small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The vineyards are in the process of conversion to organic viticulture.
