CHÂTEAU MARQUIS D'ALESME

2012 3ème Cru Classé Margaux

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification 3ème Cru Classé

Oaky, but a pretty remarkable fruit nose too, sweet and concentratedly expressive. Pretty good so far. Quite a sense of having been wrought. Somehow the finish not as appealing as the start, almost too much in some directions. One to look at again. Rating: 89 L&S (Apr 2013)

The Marquis d’Alesme is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between 9 and 17 October. It is being matured in 65% new oak, the rest one-year old. It has a lifted, perfumed, floral bouquet that is very Margaux-like – precise and controlled with well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with an oaky entry that rather dominates the fruit. It needs to put on a weight and gain more tension at the back end to maintain balance, whilst the finish feels just a little leaden at the moment. Perhaps 50% new oak would have rendered a better 2012? Let’s see. Rating: 87-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2013)

This medium-bodied wine exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, blueberries and spring flowers with the oak clearly pushed to the background. It is a major revelation for the vintage. This cuvee has been so disappointing for so long that it was shocking to taste a wine of such remarkable quality emerge from this classified growth estate. This is the finest wine I have ever tasted from the Marquis d'Alesme Becker estate and its relatively new owner, Marjolain De Coninck. This 37-acre property has underperformed for about as long as I've been tasting in Bordeaux, nearly 35 years. However, in 2012, yields were cut to 35 hectoliters per hectare and the final blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc hit 13.5% natural alcohol. Rating: 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2013)

Dense colour, big meaty fruit on nose and palate, well-concentrated and good depth with firm tannins to back it up. Drink: 2017 - 2025. Rating: 16.75 Steven Spurrier (Apr 2013)

Château Marquis d'Alesme

Established by the Marquis d'Alesme in 1585, the estate was originally planted in 1616. The property was acquired in 1809 by Monsieur Becker, who attached his name to that of the estate, and for a period the wine was called simply "Becker" in Bordeaux. In the early 20th Century, the property was bought by Comte Jean-Jules Théophile Chaix-d'Est-Ange, who had also inherited neighbouring Château Lascombes from his father, who intended to combine the two estates, but died in 1923 before carrying out the plan. The original Marquis d'Alesme château became offices for Lascombes, with the original château of Desmirail taking its place. The estate saw a succession of owners, including English firm WH Chaplin & Co and the Zuger family, until it was sold in 2006 to petrochemical industry businessman Hubert Perrodo . Apparently with elaborate plans of combining several of his Margaux estates, no changes took place after Perrodo was killed in a skiing accident in late 2006. The estate is currently run by Nathalie Perrodo.
