The Bolgheri ripeness, which gives such depth and breadth, is there in spades, but there is something about this site which gives an extraordinary textural sensation, smooth but strong, like a fine soft leather, it seems all of a piece, with flavours that seem to come from sun and earth, even a sea breeze freshness. Immensely complex, it will develop over many years.

L&S (Mar 2016)

The 2012 Messorio is a drop dead gorgeous wine. Warm summer temperatures have done their part to shape a soft and supple wine that feels like silk sheets against the palate. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, bold cherry, leather, spice, tar, licorice and grilled herb. The youth of the wine allows you the perspective of contemplating each one of those aromas individually. They will, of course, reach greater harmony and integration as the wine continues its long evolution. This wine reflects beautifully on the magnificence of Merlot in Coastal Tuscany. Drinking range: 2018 - 2040 Rating: 97 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2016)

Ripe and expressive, featuring sweet cherry, plum, currant, leather and earth flavors married to mouthcoating tannins. Lush and fresh, yet firm and chewy on the long, compact finish. Very complex and powerful. Merlot. Drinking range: 2017 - 2023 Rating: 95 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2016)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
