For Marcello, the 2013 has an added dimension of elegance and lift compared to the 2011 & 2012. This feels very fine and long with a good deep fruit underlying the straighter, firmer core. Dark plum juice and some lovely wood-spice combine to make this intense yet elevated. More focused than some vintages but delicious and, as ever, so fairly priced. L&S (Feb 2018)

Good full ruby-red. Inviting aromas of red cherry pie, black cherry, sweet spices, mocha and dried herbs. Densely packed and silky, displaying superb intensity to the high-pitched red cherry and berry flavors. This sexy, velvety wine offers terrific lift and sappiness, but has a very firm spine of noble tannins and lively acids that leaves a lingering impression of a classic Brunello. Lush and very long, this beauty is already irresistible now. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 93 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2018)

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino opens to dark ruby intensity with deep garnet highlights. The wine shows intensity and dark fruit aromas of blackberry, plum and black cherry. The fruit ripeness is evident and immediate, despite the cool growing conditions of this vintage. There is a point of tannin tightness on the close that should soften with a few more years in the bottle. Rating: 89 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2018)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
