BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2013 Fuligni

EN PRIMEUR

Balsamic, aniseed, leather, cherry and damson aromas with some florality and just a touch of spice. Lovely concentration on the palate, deep fruit core, spice, coffee, mocha and leather, very elegant and fine. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030L&S (Nov 2018)

From a relatively cool, predominantly east-facing site. Woodland violets, rosehip and herbal tea aromas unfold slowly, dark tones of strawberry, mineral and cinnamon chiming in on the palate. Powerful tannins dominate at the moment, and will need time to unwind. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Jul 2018)

Luminous red. High-pitched aromas of sour red cherry, raspberry, rose, stainless steel, white pepper and minerals. Dense and silky in texture but displays great juiciness, clarity and floral lift; the lively but harmonious acidity really lifts and frames the bright red and mineral flavors. Totally saturates the palate and yet comes off as virtually weightless. This hauntingly beautiful wine showcases everything Brunello can be when made from an ultra-competent producer farming Sangiovese vines that grow in what is a real grand cru section of the much too large Brunello di Montalcino denomination. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 97 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2018)

The Fuligni 2013 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits a dark garnet color with copper-like highlights at the rim. The wine is sophisticated and austere in character, and the fruit tones are etched and firm. All of these qualities contribute to the overall sense of finesse and pedigree presented by Fuligni. Dark cherry and dried fruit segue to mineral aromas and campfire ash. The wine maintains a somewhat serious and introspective quality throughout. This Annata Brunello shows more nuance compared to the 2012 Riserva. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 93 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2018)

Concentrated mid ruby. Fresh, vigorous cherry nose and lots of concentrated cherry on the palate and fine, coating tannins. Youthful, but can already be approached. True class. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 17+ Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Feb 2018)

A balanced and firm red with plum, light chocolate, walnut and spice character. Medium to full body and silky tannins. I love the flavorful finish. Drink in 2021. Drinking range: 2021 - Rating: 96 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Nov 2017)

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
