2013 Tenuta Monteti
|Grapes||Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Alicante Bouschet, Merlot, Petit Verdot|
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Caburnio is a dark and compelling expression from the Tuscan Coast. The bouquet is vertical and bright with nicely delineated tones of candied cherry, kirsch or crème de cassis. The wine shows distictive elegance, and that comes through very nicely in this balanced vintage. This is an excellent value option. Drinking range: 2017 - 2024 Rating: 91 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Nov 2017)
*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Although it is composed almost entirely from a blend of Bordeaux varieties, dominated by Cabernet (with an addition of 10% Alicante Bouschet), Caburnio tastes quintessentially Italian and of the Tuscan coast. Dark colour, dark fruit flavours, fully ripe and round, with the coastal freshness to keep it elegant and moreish. Drinking range: 2017 - 2023L&S(Nov 2018)
Owned by Paolo Baratta, the Cambridge-educated head of the Venice Biennale, Caburnio is one of the great bargains amongst contemporary Tuscan wines. Like the other more famous Super-Tuscans, this is a blend of non-Italian grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the addition of the Alicante-Bouschet grape variety. It has a brightness yet possesses considerable depth of fruit with no annoying leanness. Lea & Sandeman have been championing this great value wine since it first appeared just over a decade ago. Perfectly approachable now, it will continue to improve beyond the end of the decade.Bruce Palling, The Week(Jan 2018)
Tenuta Monteti is situated in the southern part of the Maremma, some fifteen kilometres from the border of the region of Scansano, under the hill of Monteti, an amphitheatre which protects the estate from coastal winds. The twenty-five hectares of vineyard are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Alicante and Merlot in individual lots of one hectare, each vinified separately in the new, state of the art, winery.
The wines are marked by a pronounced individuality, reflecting not only the 'terroir' of the region, but more importantly a freshness of fruit and balanced acidity which makes them so very drinkable. They are intentionally understated wines which perform on the palate in a musical fashion - a delicate introduction which builds to the most wonderful crescendo.
