2013 Bodegas Caro
|Grapes||Cab Sauv, Malbec|
CARO, from CAtena and ROthschild, has a strong Argentine identity, heralded by Malbec, while obtaining further elegance and complexity through blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination has made a rich and refined wine; a harmonious balance between the Argentine and Bordeaux styles. About 70 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 per cent Malbec. Aged in barrel for 18 months - 60% of which are new. Winemaker's notes (Nov 2016)
*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Started in 1993, Caro is a joint venture between Catena and Domaines Baron de Rothschild. Christian le Sommer (ex Chateau Latour) is is charge of the winemaking. This is South American wine in a revolutionary style that is altogether more appetising than the norm.
Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, cocoa powder and peppery herbs. Suave, fine-grained and energetic, offering slightly gamey flavors of currant, tobacco leaf, mint, leather and minerals. In a surprisingly supple style for a wine with pronounced green elements. Again, this strikes me as more like Bordeaux than Mendoza. Finishes with smooth tannins, a slightly tart quality and excellent length.
