2013 Blanc de Blancs Brut

Grapes Chardonnay

The 2013 Blanc de Blancs offers up a delicate bouquet of confectioners sugar, honey and crisp yellow orchard fruit, complemented by subtly reductive hints of shrimp shell and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, racy and precise, it's fine-boned but penetrating. The 2013 is a charming, comparatively immediate Blanc de Blancs from Nyetimber. William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Dec 2020)

Lemon zest and wet chalk on the nose are subtle but distinct. The palate comes in with a precise, lemony focus that runs along a fault line of central freshness, buffered by silky, fine and gentle but persistent mousse. The riches of this wine are in its chalky, understated depths, in the fine detail of its mousse and in the inherent, cool, precise freshness. This is a joy that requires stillness. But if subtle elegance is your thing, you are in for a treat. There is something almost timeless about this. Rating: 95 The Wine Enthusiast www.winemag.com (Nov 2019)

Pale straw with a greenish tinge. Very light, flirtatious nose. This tastes as though it has been deliberately styled to contrast with the Classic Cuvée that is a blend of different varieties. Quite marked, though not excessive, acidity. Really delicate texture. Tightrope balance. A ballerina of a wine with convincing persistence. Rather pure. Not trying to be champagne. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

I was excited to try this new 2013 Blanc de Blancs from leading English sparkling wine producer Nyetimber, because it is the first vintage to feature wine from their Hampshire vineyards (30%), which have chalk soils (in addition to the Sussex greensand vineyards they began with, which make up 70% of the blend).
The Chardonnay grapes were pressed and settled, and then 97% was fermented in stainless steel, and 3% in new French oak. Full malolactic fermentation. Five years on lees, and then has 9.5 g/l dosage.
This wine has generosity and precision at the same time, with keen but well integrated acidity underpinning the ripe citrus, pear and apple fruit. There’s some bready, toasty richness, but it doesn’t obscure the fine, well structured fruit. There’s a very slight buttery, creamy richness, presumably from the malolactic fermentation, and then a long, tapering finish with lovely lemony fruit, and table grape and nectarine richness. Drinking beautifully now, this wine is really harmonious and nicely poised

Like L&S in 2018 Nyetimber are celebrated an important 30th anniversary. In 1988 as Lea & Sandeman was founded, the vines were being planted here in West Sussex. Few vineyards in England are better placed to exploit the similarity between the soils of the South Downs and those of the Champagne region in France than Nyetimber in West Sussex. But it took a couple from Chicago - Stuart and Sandy Moss - to bring the dream to life when they bought Nyetimber Manor in 1986. Vineyards followed from 1988 onwards, and the first vintage released was the 1992.

Nyetimber is now owned by Eric Heerema who already owned a vineyard in West Sussex when he bought Nyetimber in 2006 and had already identified more land for planting. All were amalgamated into Nyetimber which, now, comprises some 350 acres, all planted to Chardonnay and the Pinots Noir and Meunier, making it at the time the biggest vineyard in England.
