BANDOL

2014 Cuvée Migoua Domaine Tempier

EN PRIMEUR

From the high vineyards of Migoua. Wonderful aromatics, intense spice and then myrtle, blackberry and a sleek sexy delivery on the palate. Really good drive. More sleek. But that mineral side again. The Cinsault pops up brightly and glides along nicely. This is pure and sleek, more muscular. Sexy though. rich acid, lovely stone fruit, woodland fruit, forest floor, spice and herbs. From a slightly higher elevation site, the 2014 Bandol La Migoua is an elegant, complex 2014 that offers bright acidity, lots of black cherry and black raspberry fruits, medium-bodied richness and fine, sweet tannin. The acidity would give me pause, yet it has terrific mid-palate depth and surprising concentration, all of which suggest short-term cellaring. Domaine Tempier is an old family estate, owned by the Peyrauds since Lucien Peyraud married Lucie Tempier in 1936. The family was largely instrumental in getting the appellation of Bandol established in 1941. The reds are the quintessential expression of Mourvèdre, grown on terraced vineyards on steep hills around the 'plan du Castellet'.

Traditional vinification using indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in a variety of different sized oak (25 to 75hl) for between 18 and 20 months. These are wines which are capable of long ageing, but even young they have a finesse of fruit and earthy flavour, coupled with fine-grained tannins, which lift them above the generality of Provençal reds.
