CHÂTEAU MEYNEY

2014 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Saint Estèphe

EN PRIMEUR

For the last few years there have been some promising signs here and seeing where it is, on a decent 'croupe' of gravel overlooking the river just south of Montrose, it always seems a little surprising they cannot do even better here on a regular basis. Perhaps they are now getting on a roll. Following a good effort for 2013, they have pulled out a cracker this year. Still Saint Estèphe in style, but with lovely weight and fruit density. There is a creamy, rich feel, gently seasoned with lovely pepper and just a tad of sophisticated vanilla and oak spice. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2015)

The insider's St Estephe thanks to its location directly next to Château Montrose (although on fairly different terroir, with more clay in the gravel-dominant soils). One of the sleeper hits of the vintage, and it is just starting to open up at eight years old. Inky ruby in colour, still young in expression, keeping the focus on dark bitter chocolate, a little earthy, old school St Estèphe character, plenty of heart, firm and deep through the mid palate. Harvest October 1 to 21. Hubert de Boüard consultant. Drinking range: 2023 - 2036 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2022)

The delightful 2014 Meyney marks a year when winemaker Anne Le Naour and her team raised their game once more. A nose of lovely red berry fruit mixed with wilted rose petals and cedar gains intensity with aeration. The palate demonstrates much finer tannins than previous vintages, well-pitched acidity and superb precision on the classically styled finish. This is just entering its drinking plateau. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2020)

The 2014 Meyney is a real turn up for the books. It has a very intense, detailed bouquet with pure blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and dried violet aromas, gaining vivacity with almost each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, grippy and dense and yet not overpowering. The oak is very well assimilated although it clams up towards the finish. It is a wine that will require a decade in bottle but there is huge potential here. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)

Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, smoke, chocolate, licorice and tobacco are some of the signatures in the 2014 Meyney. This is one of the more overt, flamboyant 2014s readers will come across. Although certainly not a shy wine, it is loaded with personality. The late harvest and the generally intense style favored by consulting winemaker Hubert de Boüard are very much in evidence. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2018 - 2034 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

The Château Meyney 2014 is a little gem. The nose is classic Saint Estèphe with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine delineation and poise, a sense of mineralité that will hopefully be manifested in bottle. The palate is fresh on the entry with slightly chalky tannin, decent weight in the mouth with a graphite finish that is as much Pauillac as Saint Estèphe. Excellent. Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

A deep, powerful wine, the 2014 Meyney shows the more virile, imposing side of the vintage. Black cherries, plums, game, smoke, tobacco and menthol are all supported by a spine of firm tannin that gives the wine its imposing structure. This fruit did not come in until October 30, very late, even by the standards of the year. The style is decidedly virile, with more than enough pure depth and underlying structure to develop beautifully in bottle for many years. Consulting Winemaker Hubert de Boüard is doing terrific work at Meyney. Rating: 90-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

Full body, dense and silky with a beautiful dark currant and berry character. Long and silky. Very fine. Best Meyney in years! Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2015)

Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.

The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.

In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
