It’s a common complaint (not least from my father) that for the money of a Grand Marque champagne, say £40, you could have far more pleasure from a still wine. Well, I doubt any wine on the market offers as much pleasure per pound as this English champagne rival. It’s made from Chardonnay fermented and aged in oak like a baby Krug. And like Krug it’s full of yeasty, nutty and cooked apple flavour. All this for under £25! Henry Jeffreys, The Spectator (Jun 2017)

*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.

Pale in colour, this youthful, all-Chardonnay fizz from Surrey displays good floral aromatic intensity with a distinctively flavoured, gently toasty quality whose crème fraîche-like mousse and hedgerow fruit flavours are balanced out by a tangy, dry finish. Rating: 88 www.thewinegang.com (Jun 2017)

Greyfriars Vineyard

Greyfriars was originally planted in 1989 and has been producing great grapes and wines for over 20 years. We took over in late 2010 with the aim of expanding the vineyard dramatically, producing stunning English sparkling wine and building a state of the art winery, cellar and tasting room. We are well on the way to that goal.

We have planted over 40 acres of new vines, predominantly the three classical Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This will enable us to create a small range of spectacular English sparkling wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs.

The Downs in southern England are blessed with similar geological and soil conditions to the Champagne region in France. At Greyfriars we have a clay/loam topsoil over several hundred feet of wonderful free draining Cretaceous chalk. The chalk was originally deposited over a hundred million years ago when this entire area was submerged under a tropical sea. The highest part of the estate offers splendid views towards the South Downs and east towards Guildford and beyond.

Six of the best from ENGLAND

Much is made of the strata of chalk soil that hosts the vineyards of Champagne, that runs under northern France and the Channel to re-emerge in Kent and Sussex as the Downs, and many of England’s vineyards cling to that very chalk soil. But, crucially, we have the climate, on the very margins of where grapes can be persuaded to ripen, to produce the tart base wines that are ideal for high quality sparkling wine production. All that, the classic grape varieties and much expertise and even more enthusiasm has propelled England to the forefront of the sparkling wine world. In this case we've got wines from four different estates, all with something to say on the subject, and the case includes a couple of cheeky rosés because we do it so well.
