2014 Blanc de Blancs Brut

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin United Kingdom, England
ABV 12%

Blanc de Blancs was the wine that put Nyetimber on the map in the early 1990’s. Since then, the UK sparkling wine industry has gone from strength to strength. Thanks Nyetimber!
The 2014 Blanc de Blancs was launched a few weeks ago at a small event at Bentley’s Oyster Bar in London. And yes, there were of course oysters. Purely for educational purposes. I couldn’t think of a better way to taste vintage sparkling wine. The oysters really highlighted the salinity of the 2014. On the nose there were notes of brioche, honeysuckle, vanilla and citrus. A delicate mousse and that incredible salinity and freshness on the palate. Perfectly balanced.
A delicious sparkling wine that would give many Champagnes a run for their money. If you have the patience, this will certainly develop into something more exciting with a few more years in the cellar. If not, it’s an absolute joy to drink now.

This smells like an autumn apple festival! Gloriously appley. And such purity! A wine that is not relying on lees ageing to give it depth or flavour or richness – it's all there in this incredible fruit. It fills the mouth, a trumpet concerto of silver and gold notes, while the acidity feels like the spine-tingling vibrations of harp strings, thrumming up and down – I can feel this wine like a thread-fine electric current under my skin and through my bones. Translucent white spring florals dancing weightlessly through prismic citrus; lime, yuzu, grapefruit peel. Then, right at the end, a lick of cold salted butter, a dab of cumin and coriander spice. Outstanding. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030 Rating: 17.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2021)

Made from 100% estate-grown fruit, the wine expresses “the warm and fine weather conditions of the 2014 growing season: an excellent harvest with ripe fruit flavours and a beautifully balanced acidity,” says winemaker Brad Greatrix. “I would serve Blanc de Blancs alongside delicious British seafood such as fresh white crab on toast, buttery Dover sole or a big bowl of creamy mussels,” Winemaker's notes (Oct 2021)

The 2014 Blanc de Blancs was bottled in March 2015 and disgorged in March 2020 and is due to hit the market in 2021. There is a touch more red fruit here, hints of white strawberries joining the defined honeysuckle and yellow plum scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, and quite linear, as a Blanc de Blancs should be, with a little more salinity coming through on the pear and greengage finish compared to the 2013. Drinking range: 2021 - 2034 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

Nyetimber

In 1988, as Lea & Sandeman was founded, the vines were being planted here in West Sussex. Few vineyards in England are better placed to exploit the similarity between the soils of the South Downs and those of the Champagne region in France than Nyetimber in West Sussex. But it took a couple from Chicago - Stuart and Sandy Moss - to bring the dream to life when they bought Nyetimber Manor in 1986. Vineyards followed from 1988 onwards, and the first vintage released was the 1992.

Nyetimber is now owned by Eric Heerema who already owned a vineyard in West Sussex when he bought Nyetimber in 2006 and had identified more land for planting. All were amalgamated into Nyetimber which now comprises some 350 acres, all planted to Chardonnay and the Pinots Noir and Meunier, making it at the time the biggest vineyard in England, and the first to use only these three Champagne varieties

Eric's greatest act was probably the hiring of married couple Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrex in 2007, who are both winemakers, with Cherie taking the 'head winemaker' role. The couple, who had tasted a bottle given to them by Cherie's parents and recognised the potential, have, as the Nytimber website puts it 'been integral to building Nyetimber into a sparkling wine producer that rivals the best in the world'.
