* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Lifted sweet cherry with the minerally pencil-like character of the variety. Chewy, dry and firm. Not as fresh as the Bolgheri Rosso even though the aroma suggested it would be. Dry finesse in the tannins but it's quite oaky. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Rich yet focused, with flavors of black currant, olive, tobacco and iron. Features a dense grain, yet all the components work together, with balance and light tannins on the fresh, coffee-tinged finish. Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2027. Drinking range: 2018 - 2027 Rating: 93 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Jul 2018)

Captivating aromatics, bright fruit and silky, ripe tannins give the 2014 Paleo Rosso much of its inviting personality. Arresting in its beauty, the 2014 is translucent, pretty and highly nuanced. The cold, late-maturing vintage did not allow for a super-concentrated style, so the winery followed the natural rhythm of the vintage, and to great effect. In other words, the estate got every ounce of potential out of the year. In 2014, Paleo Rosso is a touch slender, but it is also vivid and exquisitely beautiful. Readers should expect a perfumed Paleo Rosso built on grace rather than power. The 100% new French oak is impeccably balanced. In other words, Le Macchiole crushed it. Drinking range: 2020 - 2029 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2018)

Tre BicchieriGambero Rosso (Nov 2017)

The 2014 Paleo (100% Cabernet Franc) shows an introverted personality, much like the Messorio from the same vintage. With a few stern swirls of the glass, the wine begins to show increased substance and grit with black fruit, cured leather and spice aromas. The wine oozes darkness overall. It appears opulent and bold in terms of aromas, yet the mouthfeel is more streamlined and compact instead. In terms of the palate, this edition of Paleo definitely needs to flesh out further with additional cellar aging. Drinking range: 2019 - 2035 Rating: 92 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2017)

Pretty berry and currant character with hints of sandalwood and rose. Medium body, tight and chewy tannins and a fresh and polished finish. Drink or hold. Drinking range: 2019 - 2035 Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2017)

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
