“The 2014 Riesling The Merle Reserve is youthfully mute though still displays an aromatic array of citrus, yuzu and crushed stones accented by peach blossoms and hints of white pepper and coriander seeds. Light-bodied and dry, the very crisply defined palate is taut and needs time. It finishes long and steely” 93+pts eRobertParker Rating: 93-93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2016)
“100% Polish Hill River fruit from the Thickett Block. The whitest of all the Pike 2014 Rieslings. Steely nose. An architectural sculpted wine, that reminds me of the bare bones of a skyscraper. Long and complex and deep. Very green, very embryonic, very hidden away, very much a wine to leave well alone for now. (TC)12% Drink 2015-2025” 17/20, Jancis Robinson Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2016)
“Brothers Neil and Andrew Pike celebrated their 30th vintage at Pikes in the Polish Hill River district of the Clare Valley in 2014. The Merle is their top Riesling, the expression of slate soils tapped by mature vines from two blocks in the family vineyard. The brothers’ attention to detail begins in the vines, with an eco-friendly approach that comes close to organic, including mulching and mid-row cover cropping. Minimalist, modern, temperature controlled winemaking preserves delicacy and vineyard definition” 18.5/20 (95pts) Decanter Magazine Rating: 95-95 Decanter Magazine (Aug 2016)
“A single block (Thicket) Riesling from the Polish Hill River district. Immediately takes hold of the palate with its powerful depth and length, the ripe fruit flavours balanced by the typical slatey acidity on the back-palate and finish. It has the grunt to evolve over decades to come” 97pts, Halliday Drinking range: 2020 - Rating: 97-97 James Halliday - winecompanion.com.au (Aug 2016)
“The top of the Pikes riesling range, this has won many accolades and is a distinctive and concentrated expression of lime citrus, mineral salts and gentle spice; there's a flinty edge too. The palate has extra depth and textural layering and marries intense lime citrus flavor with white peach and green melon. Acidity adds sherbet-like spark and leaves the palate tingling with flavor. Incredible length here. Drink in 2020” 96pts, James Suckling Drinking range: 2020 - Rating: 96-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2016)
Pikes Polish Hill River Estate
Owned by the Pike brothers, one of whom (Andrew) was for many years the senior viticulturist with Southcorp, the other (Neil) a former winemaker at Mitchells. Pikes now has its own winery, with Neil Pike presiding.
Generously constructed and flavoured wines are the order of the day, but wines which also have a restraint and a drinkability far ahead of some of the 'maximum one glass' reds that seem to dominate Australian shows and exports.
