The 2014 Rubicon displays the restraint and elegance of the cooler vintage. Still showing a very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Beautifully perfumed and floral nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note and stony minerality also evident on the nose. Still youthful and intense, promising further maturation potential. The palate is medium bodied, structured by beautifully sleek, ripe tannins which restrain the vibrant delicate fruit typical of this vintage, giving the wine an opulent texture which is kept focused by the linear acidity. The wine lingers on the palate with creamy fruit mouth-filling tannins. 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit VerdotWinemaker's notes (Jul 2016)

Meerlust

Hannes Myburgh is the 8th generation of Myburghs to own Meerlust since they bought the estate in 1756. Aside from vineyards, there is a fine old manor house and estate 15 miles south of Stellenbosch.
The first owner of the property, a German immigrant named Henning Huising, settled there in 1693 and named his new-found home 'Meerlust', meaning 'pleasure of the sea'. They are most well known for the iconic Bordeaux blend - Rubicon - first introduced in 1980. Named after the Rubicon River, the border of ancient Rome, because as Julius Caesar's decision to cross the border profoundly changed the course of Roman politics, so the Myburghs had crossed a new frontier hoping to change the way South Africans thought about red wine.
