Here a notably earthier nose offers up notes of various dark berries, pepper and a hint of the sauvage. Like those of the Bourgogne, the middle weight flavors are round, supple and forward with an inviting verve to the mildly rustic finish that makes one feel like drinking it. This would make a fine choice for an all-around house red that could be aged for a few years too if desired. 2018+ Rating: 87 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2016)

Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot

Laurent's wife Marie-Anne inherited half of her family's property, the Pommard domaine of Pothier-Rieusset, and he and his father have now bought the other half. The wines from this domaine represent excellent value, and they age very well too, despite being attractive young. Laurent's 1992 Grandes Ruchottes came top of a tasting of wines of that vintage in 2012, ahead of some supposedly much 'grander' domaines. Laurent manages to pack in a lot alongside his running of the vineyard. He has a sophisticated microlight which he flies to all corners of France, he keeps and hunts hawks, and conducts the Chassagne brass band as well as dabbling in Mayoral duties - on top of being a father.

BURGUNDY selection

Just when you think Burgundy is getting a tad expensive, some other upward pressures are applied to prices - small harvests and Chinese wine buyers are the current in vogue factors. Luckily for you, there are merchants out there (or here, to be precise) with the nouse to seek out good value even in a region where good value can feel hard to come by. Here's a fine old selection, red and white, all with prices south of £20 a bottle - not necessarily a price to tempt the less discerning away from the discount supermarket but it does mean that us ordinary mortals can still afford to drink Burgundy.
