An aromatic, full, nutty southern Burgundy with a floral perfume of jasmine and acacia and a richly textured palate with nougat sweetness and nuttiness cut by fresh green peach and spice. For all its breadth and nutty richness, it has an overriding purity and elegance. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2017)

The 2014 Vire-Clesse Quintaine, which has seven to eight grams per liter residual sugar, has a pure and generous bouquet of acacia honey, hints of almond and peach, more accurately overripe peaches that are well defined. The palate is very well balanced, that acidity counterbalancing the richness in situ. It has a lovely, slightly viscous texture and a complex second half of white peach, apricot and a pinch of spice. It just seems to flow across the mouth. Personally, I would be inclined to serve this as a slightly chilled desert wine. This is outstanding. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2017)

Domaine Émilian Gillet

Jean Thévenet is a legend in these parts and thankfully still pops up whenever we visit the cellar to taste. However it is Gautier, his son who has been running the domaine now for some time. The handover of knowledge and practices has been complete and the domaine continues to blaze a trail. The wines are fabulous, hand-crafted beauties, with extraordinary texture, complexity and impact. The Thevenet family continue to conjure up magic here in this corner of the Maconnais. From old vines the comes impeccable fruit - some picked quite late in the season - it then undergoes very long slow fermentations that gentlly bubble on for weeks and it is this controlled approach which brings so much to the wines. These are esoteric but not odd - just fantastically enjoyable drinking that punch well above their weight.
