2015 Bussia Sergio Barale
Bussia is renowned for the deep blue clay soil that lies beneath and always delivers wines with breadth and structure. Still very fine in the way it delivers everything, but a great depth of dark fruit fills out the core with sinew and intensity. Nice flesh and tannic richness envelopes layers of tar, damson, cherry and violet. The acidity is bright and balancing with great drive on the long finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 L&S (Oct 2020)
*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles (or 9l equivalent) of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Barale traces its roots all the way back to 1870 when Barolo appeared on the scene in the Langhe, promoted by the Marchesi Falletti and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour.
Francesco Barale, great-grandfather of the current owner, was among the pioneers in the production of Barolo. Today Sergio Barale and daughters Eleonora and Gloria carry on the old family tradition. The nineteenth-century manor house in the historic center of Barolo is the administrative and commercial headquarters of the company. Nearby are the historic underground cellars, where new technology has been introduced in accordance with traditional rules. The vinification and aging processes adopted are aimed at producing balanced wines in which the characteristics of the grape variety and region of origin prevail.
To some Barolo represents the very pinnacle of Italian wine. The majestic ethereal character appeals to the senses in a similar way to red Burgundy, even if the style of the wines is utterly different. This is the intense and seductive world of Nebbiolo, where solid tannins vie unexpectedly well with delicate fruit, and where age unwinds ever more complex flavours.
