Packed with cherry and black currant flavors, this red is fruity and effusive. Firm, but the tannins are coated in flesh and the finish offers spice and mineral accents. A rich and layered red with plum and currants. Full body, plenty of ripe fruit and lots of flavor at the finish. Made from a blend of merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso is mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The Merlot is harvested on the early side in order to preserve acidity, meanwhile the other varieties are harvested a bit later to add softness and roundness. In order to highlight the crispness of the fruit, one-fourth of the mass is aged in cement and the rest goes into various types of neutral barrel. This terrific wine boasts firm lines and a soft, cherry-driven core. The finish offers a quirky collection of exotic spice aromas that are mild and subtle. Some 130,000 bottles were produced. The 2015 and 2013 vintages are certainly different from each other, but they share the same considerable freshness and short-term drinkability, in spite of their remarkable complexity and structure. For the first time, the Bolgheri Rosso blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon. We planted it three years ago and it is finally starting to bear fruit. The Cabernet will play an important role in our Bolgheri Rosso wine from now on, as it is a late-ripening variety that will allow us to make the wine more elegant and harmonious. The Bolgheri Rosso 2015 blend is the following: 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah. Winemaker's notes (Dec 2016)
Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. Located in Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.
All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
