Wow! What a beautiful and inviting nose this has. There are delicious notes of deeply aromatic cherry and juicy plum and bluer fruits too. This certainly has more breadth and up-front impact than either Padelletti or Fuligni - but there is beautiful complexity too. A surprising subtlety to the richly patterned and textured kaleidoscope of deep, juicy fruits and tasty hints of undergrowth. Some super mineral and herbal notes too, this is loaded! Spiced, pretty, complex and long - its all here in this deeply satisfying Brunello. Bravo Marcello! Drinking range: 2020 - L&S (Feb 2020)

In addition to achieving organic certification in 2012, Collemattoni's new cellar was built with rainwater recovery pipes and generates 80% of its own electricity through biomass energy and solar panels. Assembled from five vineyards all located in the southern reaches of Montalcino, this captures the intense ripeness of the vintage with sweet cherry fruit, chocolatey tannins and a creamy texture. Yet there is a refreshing juiciness and lift of woodland herbs underneath. A curvaceous, exuberant, jolly wine with lots of purity. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031Decanter Magazine (Apr 2020)

Good full red. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, kirsch, mocha and herbs on the inviting nose. Despite its size, this is graceful and impeccably built, with very precise flavors of red plum, blueberry, milk chocolate and minerals that expand and broaden on the long, seductive finish. Outstanding Brunello that offers both size and refinement. In my opinion, Collemattoni is a very underrated, off the radar Brunello estate but its wines deserve to be better known. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 95 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2020)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and rooted firmly in the earth, showing crushed black cherries with a mix of green stems, undergrowth, moist mineral tones and savory spice. Silky textures contrasted by brisk acids, as tart black cherry, along with balsamic spice, savory herbs, leather and wild flowers all emerge. The finish is long and spicy, with just a bit of heat. Fine tannins settle in, drying out the dark red fruits and leaving a salty minerality that punctuates the experience quite nicely. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

Collemattoni

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
