CHÂTEAU MARJOSSE

2015 Bordeaux

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Bordeaux
ABV 13.5%

This is classic 2015 - a joyfully full style of Bordeaux. Lovely ripe fruit with great breadth and depth - but this is not sweet. There is a dark edge - more damson and prune than sweet plum. A hint of dark chocolate dusting too, which adds another dimension to the black berries and scent of dried flowers. Complex, rich and intense - this sweeps across the palate with soft insistence and goes on and on. Impressive stuff, being made here at this unremarkable address by a remarkable wine-making maestro - Pierre Lurton. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 L&S (Sept 2018)

From the home estate of Pierre Lurton (of Cheval Blanc), the 2015 Château Marjosse is a little gem in the vintage that offers complex notes of black cherries, earth, and cedary herbs. This medium-bodied, juicy, elegant 2015 has good density, integrated acidity, polished tannin, and a classic, chiseled feel. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years. Rating: 88 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Nov 2017)

The 2015 Marjosse has a refined bouquet with dark cherries and boysenberry fruit that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, dipping a little in the middle, but coming together on the attractive, licorice-tinged finish. A lovely little Entre-Deux-Mers from Pierre Lurton. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2016)

Pierre Lurton's home farm. He has lowered the quantity. 80% Merlot, 10% of each Cab. Deep crimson. Attractive tobacco-leaf nose. Lots of sweetness and roundness. Racy. Real edge of savour. GV? Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2016)

Château Marjosse

Pierre Lurton is a true 'Grand Homme' in Bordeaux. Since the age of 23 when he stopped his medical studies and got involved with running the celebrated Clos Fourtet in St Emilion, it was clear he was going to be a serious player. But one wonders if even he thought he would achieve quite so much. He now runs both Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Yquem - not to mention several spin-offs around the globe.

So it is heartening to hear that this star of the elite has found a haven in the far less glamorous 'Entre de Mers' region. Chateau Marjosse is his home and it sits right between his 2 day-jobs, on a line between Sauternes and St. Emilion.

Since he bought the property in 1997 he has updated the winery and replanted many of the plots. Using his understanding of what can make the very best wines in this part of the world. Denser planting, clever canopy management and hand harvesting are all part of the regime here - these Grand Cru ideals are bringing real class to the wines he makes here.

Chateau Marjosse, simply labelled Bordeaux, is a sophisticated and polished claret made with 80% Merlot and 10% of the 2 Cabernets. It is right up there in quality terms with many of the grander and more expensive names of St Emilion - and represents a rare bargain for a wine with such pedigree.
