2015 Grand Cru Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot
|Sub-district||Côte de Nuits|
55 year-old vines in les Treux. Different again after the Suchots, a sweet ripe elegance here, big body, and an extra dimension of something saline and savoury too. Intense, bold tannins and again huge length. Drinking range: 2025 - L&S (Nov 2016)
*Case price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
Yves Confuron’s 0.4-hectare parcel was planted in the 1950s and is next to both Grands Echézeaux and the Clos de Vougeot. It’s a strapping, chunky, concentrated wine with lots of stemmy tannins, bold plum and blackberry fruit, fine acidity and layers of incense and Asian spices. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Jan 2017)
(from a .45 ha parcel in Les Treux where Clos de Vougeot meets Grands Echézeaux). Like the Suchots this is markedly floral in nature with a slightly darker fruit profile and an even wider range of spice elements. There is outstanding volume and richness to the palate soaking middle weight plus flavors that possess a seductive, even opulent texture on the firm and mocha-inflected finale. Once again, patience absolutely required. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2017)
(from the lieu-dit Les Treux, adjacent to Grands-Echézeaux): Dark ruby-red. Cool minty lift to the aromas of blackberry and licorice. At once densely packed and lively, conveying an impression of tactile concentration to its blackberry, boysenberry, crushed black cherry and spice flavors. Not as lush as the Suchots; in fact, utterly primary and unformed, with its tannins arriving earlier. Wonderfully pure wine. Rating: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2017)
Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot
Vignerons since the seventeenth century, the Confuron family even have a strain of Pinot Noir named after them - Pinot Confuron. The domaine has several Grands Crus vineyards as well as the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Suchots, making it one of the very top domaines of the Côte de Nuits. Yves Confuron follows his family tradition of whole-bunch fermentation, giving an extra scent on the nose due to the stems of the grapes remaining intact, and picking very late. One of the strengths of Confuron Cotetidot wines is their ability to age and develop, due to the low yields and old vines that are used, causing them to be more approachable in the medium to long term.
