FINCA DE LOS LOCOS RIOJA

2015 Bodegas y Viñedos Artuke

Grapes Graciano, Tempranillo
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Rioja
ABV 14%

A single vineyard planted in 1981 by Arturo's father, a rich and serious wine, plenty of depth of flavour and a tannic frame which will see it develop comfortably for ten or more years. As with all these wines there a beautiful definition and harmony in the lightness of touch with the oak and the very natural, 'grown' feel to the fruit. Drinking range: 2017 - 2030 L&S (Mar 2017)

Rich and layered and exciting with tobacco-leaf layers and depth. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2018)

The single-vineyard 2015 Finca de Los Locos was sourced from 2.8 hectares of vines planted in 1981 in their village, Baños de Ebro. The village suffered four hailstorms in 2015, the last of which happened the 31st of August, so the affected vineyards had to be harvested on September 3rd. Half of this plot was affected, and they lost maybe 30% of the grapes. The blend is approximately 78% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 2% Viura, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 600-liter barrels and one 3,500-liter oak foudre for 12 months. This is the year when they introduced the larger casks, and the wine shows it. I think the fact that they had to harvest early because of the hail probably provided an unusual freshness for the vintage. It's very tasty and nicely balanced, with fine tannins and acidity that lifts up the wine. Rating: 92+ Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Feb 2018)

Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
