2015 Tinta de Toro Màquina y Tabla

Grapes Tinta de Toro
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Toro
ABV 13.5%

This is one of the (bio) dynamic duo's most fascinating wines. Tinta de Toro is another name for Tempranillo - the delicious soft and spicy red grape that is at the heart of so many of Spain's finest red wines. Oriol and Susana's is really interesting. The fruit comes from 50-60 year old vines and is made - as with all their wines - in a totally bio-dynamic way. For them nature is in charge unequivocally with this wine - in the vineyard and in the winery. So it is unsurprising to find a good, 'real' hint on the nose. Without a doubt this is the most 'Natural' tasting of their range. Initially pushing the boundaries on the nose and palate, there is a gentle prickle on the tongue - and then the fruit takes over - svelte rich and pure. The old vine intensity is impressive - but this is not big or in your face just a joyous cherry and plum laden drive of gorgeously rounded fruit. Intense wood spice and some meaty, savoury whiffs develop. There is a huge amount to enjoy here - one for those wanting to take a walk on the 'wilder side'. L&S (Aug 2018)

From 3ha of own-rooted Tempranillo. Impressively juicy and aromatic: a likeable approach to Toro. Quite fruity; dense and velvety on the palate, with a warm and clean finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2024 Rating: 93 Decanter Magazine (Feb 2019)

Made from tinta de toro (essentially tempranillo), this is a complex, serious wine made from 60-year-old vines. There are notes of tobacco, wood smoke, spice, game and earth. Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Nov 2018)

Tinta de Toro. Again they want this to be 'Vino de Pueblo' but for the moment have to call it Vino de España. Some naturalness on the nose and then concentrated and sweet. Not nearly as distinctive as their whites and rosé. Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2017)

Màquina y Tabla

It was an exciting day when we first discovered these brilliant wines, and we are delighted to be introducing them to the UK and share the joy - each wine has an incredible sense of identity and real pow! Yet all done with such charm and restrained style, they just make you smile. Pure, elegant, expressive and so, so drinkable - this is exciting stuff. They look absolutely beautiful too - could this be the perfect package from Spain!?

'Màquina & Tabla' is the brainchild of a dynamic duo - Oriol the winemaker and Susana, who is the creative genius behind the marketing and presentation. They are a tiny family business that began in 2013 in Castilla y León. Their focus is in the details, and they believe in a high quality wine that is always respectful of the land and nature. Their project started from scratch, travelling around the region looking for the oldest and most peculiar vineyards. All their grapes are cultivated bio-dynamically, grown currently in rented vineyards.

Oriol the winemaker describes himself as having been an "oenopath" who, slowly but surely, became more and more interested in winemaking, a passion that turned into a profession during the 2000 harvest in Clos Mogador. Since then as a winemaker he has lead, or taken part in, several projects, including with Vinya l'Hereu, Heretat Montrubí, Els Jelipins and Prieto Pariente. Now, with this project he says he is 'happier than a kid in a candy shop'. Susana comes from the world of arts and entertainment, having been a Creative Editor in publishing, audiovisual and new media for Prisa, Planeta and RBA, while conceptualizing new ideas, she has managed teams and projects, as well as coordinated communication and production for small projects related to art and music. Now she's bringing all of her experience and energy to Màquina & Tabla. The striking label designs by Joan Josep Bertran perhaps need a tiny bit of explanation, and you can read more about them on their website (link at the top of this page).
