This is a brilliant new arrival from Basilicata and our first ever Primitivo from the Matera DOC. It jumps out of the glass at you with some complex spices and nice note of evolution on the nose, but there is a good, firm line to the dark fruit that soon takes charge. And then a sweeter pick up on the finish. A juicier rounder feel. Good power and drive, but a soft line and a nice gentle feel. Great and polished Primitivo. L&S (Apr 2019)

An intriguing red for those who think that southern Italian Primitivo is only about high alcohol and residual sweetness. From the Basilicata DOC of Matera, Akratos is a bright, fresh wine with red fruit and lifted, spicy, floral notes on the nose, combined with mellow, juicy dark fruit on the palate. The spice and lifted characters make this medium-bodied red a brilliant match for barbecued chicken, beef and pork dishes. Drinking range: 2021 - 2024 Rating: 91 Andy Howard MW, Decanter (Jan 2021)

Battifarano

If Italy is a boot, you'll find this brilliant winery on the coast in the arch of the foot, in the southern part of Basilicata. The Battifarano farm has been owned and worked by the same family for more than five centuries.

The focus moved to wine in the 1930s and Francesco, who currently heads up the family business, is the second generation to be a trained agronomist.

This has lead to a great focus on identifying the perfect sites for each of the different varieties grown here. The aim is, to as transparently as possible, transfer their great terroir into the wine in every bottle.

Minimal interventions are made and the results speak for themselves. These are the very purest expressions of the local Basilicata varieties Primitivo and Greco, dishing up excellent value, top quality wines that are simply a pleasure to drink.
