2015 Monastrell Ecológico Ego Bodegas

Grapes Monastrell
Colour Red
Origin Spain, Jumilla
ABV 14%

Formerly known as Clos Lagoru - our friends at Bodegas Ego have run into some conflict with French wine-name regulations and so have had to re-christen our favourite new boy from Jumilla. Now known as Talento this is exactly the same wine, but with a new name and label to keep us all on our toes! Organically made in the hills of Jumilla in south eastern Spain. This is rich and deep with lovely spiced plum and a touch of baked morello cherry. Best known as the grape of Provence’s much sought after Bandol (where it is known as Mourvedre), structure and intensity abound – but this is no beast - the weight of fruit is soft and luxurious with no hard edges. This is a great example of what Spain can do so well, huge bang for your buck. Ready to drink now this will give lots of pleasure. A great value wine from this newly signed up bodega. Drinking range: 2016 - 2019 Rating: 89 L&S (Oct 2016)

*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.

Monastrell (the growling, feral mourvèdre of Bandol) is the grape behind this accomplished red from Murcia in Spain. At its heart is a rich, polished flavour of blackberries, with a whiff of violet and granitic undertow. Lovely stuff. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Feb 2017)

A fabulous, intense, plummy, cherry-ripe red from Spain Jonathan Ray (Apr 2016)

Ego Bodegas

Set up 10 year's ago Bodegas Ego is located in the heart of Jumilla, between the high plains of La Mancha and the Mediterranean to the east. These two features have a great influence on the climate - largely continental, this is a very warm region for growing grapes - with long, hot summers and cool, wet winters. These are ideal conditions for the native Monastrell grape, which naturally ripens slowly and has thicker skins than many grapes giving perfect defence against these extreme conditions. The twenty-five year old vines produce classically small bunches which are harvested in early October by hand, once they are at optimum ripeness - with a good concentration of sugar, excellent acidity and an impressive weight of fruit. This super wine is certified 'organic' and no chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers are used in the vineyards at all - preserving the pure fruit expression and importantly the health of the land. Their delicate approach to the wine making continues with the ageing process - just a short burst of two months in old American Oak barrels adds gentle spice and a creamy feel to the fruit, From their rather hick-looking winery (certainly built for function rather than beauty!) the team at Bodegas Ego are making super-fine wines at this price-level. With all the latest technology, combined with brilliant wine-making they are able deliver the purity of fruit and the best expression of Monastrell possible, a delight to drink this juicy, spicy wine simply sings from the glass.
