TASSINAIA

2015 Castello del Terriccio

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Maremma
ABV 14%

When tasted at our Italian Portfolio tasting back in February, this very much felt like slipping on a pair of much loved and really comfortable shoes. The recognition of a style and a familiarity that brings a smile to one's face. This is Tassinaia in all its pomp, arrestingly Tuscan in its outlook, it has reached a point now of perfect drinking. Fragrant with cassis and leafy tobacco, sun warmed herbs and dark chocolate. The palate is sleek and deliciously haughty, but then a flood of plum and cassis fruits push through and the gently leafy, herb and dark mocha, with just a hint of something savoury, add complexity. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 L&S (Feb 2020)

The 2015 Tassinaia is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, now with an element of Syrah. The wine is fermented partly in steel and partly in oak and brings a breeze of spice from the get-go. This second-level red from Castello del Terriccio offers plenty of rich, exuberant and succulent fruit. I imagine it will open nicely over the next few years. Tassinaia is a selection of fruit from different vineyard parcels. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 93+ Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (May 2019)

Mid crimson. There is something so Tuscan about this wine – its tangy bite – that I am not sure I would identify the varieties blind apart from an elegant cedary cassis note. Fine, sandy tannins. Elegant and the fruit eats the oak, though the oak has perhaps thickened the texture. Needs time. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

A firm and chewy red with dried fruits and hints of orange peel, making this a rich yet toned wine with an attractive tannin outline. Drink in 2020. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)

Castello del Terriccio

The Castello del Terriccio is beautifully positioned around twenty-five kilometres north of Bolgheri, with commanding views towards Corsica. The 60 hectares of vines enjoy wonderful exposure, overlooking the sea, benefitting from its brightness and cooling breezes. The vineyards are surrounded by 'maquis' and eucalyptus trees, which as well as protecting them, also contribute to the aromas and scents that so characterise the Terriccio wines.

Planted predominately with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah, the wines are made by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, who has to date brought thirteen 'Tre Bicchiere' awards to the estate.

These are wines that can be approached almost immediately and yet age so well over a decade and more.

The estate continues in the hands of Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana who took over after the extraordinarily charming Cav. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri (or 'Pucci' as he was fondly known) who died at the end of 2019. Vittorio has the same team around him working in the cellars and the vineyards and the estate is going from strength to strength.
