50% Mourvedre, 28% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 2% Carignan. This iconic Rose is made from fruit grown on steep slopes mostly facing the sea, with an average vine age of over 20 years. With low yields and hand harvesting into small boxes and then a further hand sorting in the winery, you start to understand the attention to detail that goes in to making this wine. The grapes are fully de-stemmed and then pressed with a cold maceration on the skins to extract just the right amount of fruit aromas and colour. The Mourvedre in the blend lends body and complexity whilst the Grenache lends fruit weight, Cinsault and Carignan bring spice and floral notes. This is a wine with huge personality, hints of peach, cherry, pomegranate and strawberry. Nice weight with a core of ripe acidity, a perfect match to the food of Provence. Drinking range: 2017 - 2027L&S (May 2017)

More orange-pink colour than most of the rosés in this ghostly pale Lea & Sandeman line-up – although you'd hardly call it 'deep'. Almost a relief to have a relatively fat juicy nose compared with all those wan Provences. Little bit of satsuma, bit of pomegranate, hint of spice. Definitely spicy on the palate! Wow – such a difference. You can feel the body and alcohol. Real oomph. Begging for food! Bold. Almost meaty. Lots in the mid palate and lovely chewy structure, but dry and elegant and confident. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 17 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)

Domaine Tempier

Domaine Tempier is an old family estate, owned by the Peyrauds since Lucien Peyraud married Lucie Tempier in 1936. The family was largely instrumental in getting the appellation of Bandol established in 1941. The reds are the quintessential expression of Mourvèdre, grown on terraced vineyards on steep hills around the 'plan du Castellet'.

Traditional vinification using indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged in a variety of different sized oak (25 to 75hl) for between 18 and 20 months. These are wines which are capable of long ageing, but even young they have a finesse of fruit and earthy flavour, coupled with fine-grained tannins, which lift them above the generality of Provençal reds.
