BOLGHERI ROSSO

2016 Le Macchiole

EN PRIMEUR

This thrilling red wine is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s some Syrah in the mix, too, so there is a small Rhône link, albeit tenuous. This wine is the first rung on the Le Macchiole ladder, which ends with the £150 titan Messorio, and lacks nothing in its nobility. Its flavour, though, definitely nods to the depth and majesty of its lofty stablemates. If you fancy the idea of an everyday Super- Tuscan red (if this is not an oxymoron), then this wine for you.Messorio, and lacks nothing in its nobility. As ever the blend is Merlot, Cabernet and some Syrah. This is again an unbelievably smart wine from the team here. Intense, complex and individual - but with such satisfying feel and depth it is hard to believe you can get so much class in the glass for less than £20 per bottle. The 2016 vintage release is another great example of Le Macchiole's personal interpretation of their Bolgheri terroir. the grapes used to produce this wine come from a very specific selection of their younger vineyards (Vignone 1999, Puntone 1993, Casa Nuova 1998, 2009, 2013) producing a Bolgheri DOC wine based on the traditional Bordeaux blend, typical of the area, but with its own original and distinguishing features. Bold and intense, black cherry, blackberry and tobacco. Sleek and bright with great freshness, cassis, cherry and a touch of dark chocolate, coffee and tobacco. This is a beautifully made, precise and immediately enjoyable style that will provide great drinking over the next 5 years or so. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025L&S (Nov 2017)

The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso is very fresh and elegant. It is a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Syrah. The wine presents prominent mineral notes, along with blue flower and wild berry fruits. The Bolgheri Rosso spends ten months in a combination of barrique, stainless steel and cement. Production is 140,000 bottles. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 92 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Jul 2019)

Mid soft cherry red. Gentle but fragrant with black and dark-red fruit and a touch of zesty red cherry. Chewy but smooth, satisfying and finishes fresh even with the generosity of fruit. Drinking range: 2019 - 2024 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso is fragrant and silky, both of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Bright red cherry and floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this very pretty, nuanced entry-level offering from Le Macchiole. The blend is 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Syrah, done in a combination of cement and neutral oak. Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

A deliciously spicy nose with black peppers, dried violets, hyacinth, citrus, blueberries and crushed stones. Full body, medium-chewy tannins, vibrant acidity and a succulent yet fine finish. Drink now. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and syrah. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
