BOURGOGNE ROUGE

2016 Domaine Anne Gros

EN PRIMEUR

Much more serious feel, a more intense grip than with the Haute Cote. This gets 30% new barrels to help soften the tannins which works well and yet does not blot out the lovely succulent red fruit that makes up the core here. Not a showy wine, as it still settling post racking, but amazingly this is still super attractive now. A svelte, impressive Bourgogne Rouge.L&S (Oct 2017)

(from 3 parcels in Pommard). A discreet touch of wood can be found on the red berry, plum and earth-scented nose. The racy, detailed and intense flavors exude a subtle minerality onto the delicious, clean and bracing finale. 86/2019+ Drinking range: 2019 - Rating: 86 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2018)

Between Nuits and Flagey in four little parcels totalling less than 1 ha. Tank sample. Mid garnet. Bright sweet fruit with polish and charm. Not deep but very nicely balanced. Just a little bit of grip and a violet scent. Pretty good length. Drinking range: 2018 - 2021 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Here the equally ripe and fresh nose is a bit more deeply pitched with its aromas of cassis, plum and soft spice hints. The attractively textured middle weight flavors possess solid punch that carries over to the lingering if ever-so-slightly rustic and firmer finish. This too is really quite good for its level and worth considering. Drinking range: 2020 - Rating: 86-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Bourgogne Pinot Noir suffered around a 50% loss in production due to frost. It has a fresh and generous bouquet with blackcurrant and raspberry preserve aromas. The palate has a lovely brightness to it, very well balanced with blackberry tinged with Earl Grey and a pinch of black pepper, leading to a refined if slightly short finish. This is a well-crafted Bourgogne Rouge. Drinking range: 2018 - 2022 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

3 parcels in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. 20-25 year old vines. they have Glagnipy (on the plain, below the railway.); Les Champs d’Argent and Les Paquiers. There is succulence of fruit here, red fruit and elegance. It has good depth for a Bourgogne. Firm and juicy. Spice. Very good indeed. As Anne says there’s not problem in ageing this wine should you want to..Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Anne Gros joined her father François at the family domaine in Vosne Romanée in 1988, having given up her arts studies in favour of viticulture and oenology at Beaune and Dijon, and has run the domaine alone since 1995. The Domaine now has 6.5 hectares of Pinot and Chardonnay. Anne describes herself as being 'wary of certainties and keen to preserve her freedom'.

In the vineyards Anne practises viticulture influenced by organic and biodynamic principles, and the vineyards are ploughed and fertilised with compost, but although she believes that the long-term health of the vineyards are best preserved by such methods, she likes to maintain the freedom to use conventional treatments when necessary.

In the cellar, the wines are classically made, in cement tanks for the reds, and stainless steel for the whites. They are then are aged in barrel for up to fifteen months, with 80% new wood for the grand crus, 50% for the village wines and 30% for the regional wines. Anne is quietly meticulous and almost obsessive about cleanliness in her cellar, which perhaps is reflected in the delicacy and restrained tension in her wines, which have aromatic clarity, limpid precision, sheer joie de vivre, lively balance and persistence.
