BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

2016 Riserva Vigna Fontelontano Collemattoni

EN PRIMEUR

Collemattoni are a producer we love for their modernist approach toward creating sheer pleasure – this has the swirling pool of decadent dark fruits that you’d expect to find, but at all angles is pulled up by wonderfully lifted notes. A touch of wild berry here, a floral scent there… It all finishes with a lovely savoury sweet tobacco spice. One either for the cellar, or a plate of steak frites.L&S (Feb 2022)

Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Extraordinarily concentrated nose of sweet fruit and sweet oak. On the palate lashings of sweet oak and ripe fruit with a nerve of acidity running through it. Right now the oak is a little overwhelming and I would have liked to see much less of this, but the fruit underneath is truly classy, so there might be more to come Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sept 2022)

An intense, focused nose, showing dark walnuts, currants and blueberries with some dried meat, roasted sweet spices, dried flowers and tar. Full-bodied and very tight, full of melted, creamy tannins with a mineral accent to the very long, reserved finish. Drinkable now, but better after 2024. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2022)

The Collemattoni 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Fontelontano is a bit heavy on oak and extract, putting this wine into the more contemporary or so-called modern side of the Brunello style spectrum. Those enhanced notes of spice, tar and sweet tobacco take away from the delicate floral and wild berry aromas often associated with traditional Brunello. Instead, this wine offers power, texture and high alcohol at 15%. You might consider a classic steak frites pairing. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 91 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Feb 2022)

This is a small, 13-hectare estate, spread across the Southwest and Southeast of Montalcino. The winery (and some of these 13 hectares), sits in San Angelo in Colle on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino, nestling above the famous and rather larger Col d'Orcia vineyards (145 hectares). Winemaker Marcello Bucci is making wonderfully good wines which have rapidly increased both in quality and international recognition.

With his new winery now well and truly bedded in Marcello is thriving with the greater control and flexibility he now has - this is an estate going from strength to strength and the wines have a real true imprint of these beautiful rolling hills and Marcello's gentle manner. The wines from these vineyards are fuller and riper perhaps, than Fuligni or Padelletti. However, where there may be less lacy finesse, they more than compensate with indulgent joy, not to mention with their pricing. Collemattoni make some of the best value wines of the region.
