CARDINALE

2016

EN PRIMEUR

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot. This has a ripe nose of blackberry, plum and redcurrant. It's very decadent, almost lavish in style with apparent new wood influence. There's more acidity and freshness on the palate than the nose implies. The tannins do need time to mellow but there's a plump, fruit-forward mid-palate that should delight lovers of rich, spicy, 'full-throttle' Napa Cabernet. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035L&S (Sept 2019)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Deep ruby in the glass. Ripe cassis on the nose. Heady but pure, with a hint of sweet spice. The palate has sweet cherries and good density, with chewy tannins building the structure and tempering the glossy fruit. Plenty of acid and tannic bite on the finish, which is a little drying at this stage but should mellow in time. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Sept 2019)

The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Proprietary Red Wine is blended of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. It opens with compelling chocolate box and licorice scents over a core of black and red currants, warm plums and baking spices with hints of cedar chest and pencil lead. The palate is full-bodied with layers of cassis and kirsch flavors framed by firm, grainy tannins and fabulous freshness, finishing long and spicy. 4,772 cases produced. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 97 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Cardinale is distinctly aromatic and nuanced. In 2016, winemaker Chris Carpenter built Cardinale around a core of Spring Mountain fruit. Perhaps for that reason, Cardinale is a bit more refined in the early going than is often the case. Silky, fine-grained tannins and mid-weight structure frame expressive dark cherry, plum, chocolate and new leather, but it is really the wine's overall feel that stands out most. A dollop of Merlot adds to a feeling of openness in this super-expressive Cardinale from winemaker Chris Carpenter. A range of sites in Stags Leap, Howell Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Mt. Veeder and St. Helena round out the blend. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2018)

Cardinale, founded in 1982 and owned by Jackson Family wines, is one of the older wineries in Napa’s Oakville district. While most vineyards in Napa and indeed elsewhere in the world focus on producing a number of wines each year, Cardinale concentrates all its effort into making one great wine - producing a single Cabernet Sauvignon (blended with smaller amounts of Merlot) every vintage.

Christopher Carpenter, Cardinale’s chief winemaker, regards the creation of his blended signature cabernet sauvignon as a composer would a finely balanced piece of music. He blends different layers and sounds together to create one harmonious piece. The wine is a limited-production blend from Napa Valley’s most recognized mountain appellations including Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountain. This blend of mountain terroirs, sourced from ten different vineyards, is essential to Cardinale’s character.

The steep aspects, rocky soils and exposed vineyards are instrumental in crafting this structured and complex wine. Well layered, both on the nose and the palate, it has dense, rich, dark fruit flavours while showing oaky tannins and grip on the finish.

Ordering

Prices are per case as listed 'in bond' (excluding duty paid and VAT).

Pre-Orders are a firm commitment to buy wines on release, as long as the release price sits within the upper and lower price bands set by you on the pre-order form. Pre-orders will be fulfilled subject to availability but providing this firm commitment to buy effectively gives you priority and is a good idea for the most desirable wines.

Wines listed on the website can be ordered in the usual way via the website wishlist order form. You can also send orders directly to our private client team via email. Please note that, for the most sought after wines, priority will be given to those who ordered the same wines last year and to those that have pre-ordered.

You can register your interest via the online wishlist form, by emailing privateclients@leaandsandeman.co.uk, or by calling 020 7221 1982. All wishlist requests are subject to availability and final confirmation. Inevitably, some wines will have to be allocated but please do not let that deter you from asking. We will do our best to satisfy all requests.
