CHABLIS

2016 1er Cru Beauroy Domaine Laurent Tribut

EN PRIMEUR

Great restrained texture, this is mineral is fine is intense. 'Assez tendre' says Laurent, and he is right this has a good, soft weight to it and yet there is enough tension/balance for me - but I sense Lauent would prefer more tautness. However, this has great minerality - and then a soft blanket of ripe fruit too. Unmistakable Chablis, but clearly a 'solaire' year. Very attractive.L&S (Dec 2017)

The 2016 Chablis Beauroy 1er Cru has a delightful bouquet with scents of dandelion, hints of honeysuckle and chamomile. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with a crisp line of acidity, taut and fresh with just a light nougat note towards the finish that personally I could do without. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Tasted at the Domaine Direct tasting in London. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

Bottled in April, Tribut's 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy wafts from the glass with notions of musky peaches, tangerine oil, oystershell and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, glossy and textural, with a lavish attack, good concentration and cut and a charming, giving profile. Tribut describes it as "tender" and "precocious," and I entirely agree. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Aug 2018)

The 2016 Chablis Beauroy 1er Cru is clearly a step up from the Village Cru, adorned with subtle citrus peel and light sage scents, the flintiness developing with aeration. The palate is refreshingly saline on the entry. This Beauroy is underpinned by a fine bead of acidity, nothing too heavy here, just an effortless, understated Chablis with just a tingle of spice on the aftertaste that leaves you wanting another sip. Drinking range: 2019 - 2032 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2018)

(from a 1.8 ha parcel that is divided roughly 50/50 between Beauroy proper and Côte de Troëmes). This too is exhibiting too much sulfur to reasonably evaluate the nose though the underlying fruit does seem ripe. The medium weight flavors are richer and more concentrated still though without either the same degree of minerality or refinement, all wrapped in a generously proportioned finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. Drinking range: 2020 - Rating: 88-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy has a fragrant bouquet of white and yellow flowers that marry with the white citrus fruit to sublime effect. The simplicity of this bouquet is its strength. The palate is fresh and balanced with just a touch of fatness on the entry. Orange rind and hints of bitter lemon segue into a judiciously-spiced finish, with nutmeg popping up on the aftertaste. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Bright yellow with a green edge. Citrus fruits, menthol and powdered stone on the nose; this shares a calcaire influence and the same exposure as the Côte de Léchet but there's also a white clay influence here. Not particularly high in acidity but juicy, tight and high-pitched, with a racy metallic minerality and a rather austere powdered stone quality. Again, a classic style in the context of the vintage. Rating: 90-92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Aug 2017)

Laurent Tribut is married to Vincent Dauvissat's sister, Marie Clotilde. When he started he made his wines in the Dauvissat cellar in Chablis, but now this small family-run domaine is based in Poinchy. Laurent has now officially retired and has now handed over to three of their four children (Solange, Adeline and Gabriel), with Solange taking the lead in the winery. With Laurent’s guidance the future here looks very bright.

With just 6 hectares the quantities are small - but the quality of all the cuvées is extraordinary. Pure, powerfully driven, classically shaped there is more than a passing similarity to the wines of his brother-in-law, the head-line grabbing Vincent Dauvissat. Buyers will enjoy these long-lived wines with some time in bottle too - they have a great ability to age and patience will pay off, we recently tasted the 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 2004 with Laurent in his cellar and it was bright, young and full of vigour - nearly 15 years on, and in 2020 the 2000 Beauroy was still in it’s prime. This is brilliant, classic Chablis.
