CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE

2016 Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

On the nose this is not overtly expressive. On the palate however, this is strong and deeply aromatic. Great intensity, lovely more opulent middle. Riper, richer, polished weight of more juicy, more ripe red berries and soft strawberry. Indulgent, sexy and full. Finishes with a kick of acidity and sparkle. Some gentle mineral dusting supports the long, long finish. Good, fine and indulgent.L&S (Oct 2017)

(Perrot-Minot lost half of the crop here to frost in 2016): Good dark red. Knockout nose combines all the major Clos de Bèze food groups: raspberry, spices, rose petal, leather and stony, smoky silex minerality. Large-scaled, silky and mouthfilling without any undue weight, conveying a higher-pH impression than most of the other '16s here--but Perrot-Minot assured me that it's not above 3.45. Boasts serious thickness of texture leavened by smoky soil tones. Superrich, palate-staining, aristocratic wine with a great future. Rating: 94-97 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

Once again the nose is quite cool and restrained with its wonderfully broad-ranging panoply of aromas that include red cherry, black raspberry, violet, lavender, anise and a hint of wood spice. There is outstanding volume to the refined, intense and sleekly muscular flavors that possess superb mid-palate density. Moreover there is an excellent level of dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm but not rigid tannic spine shaping the explosively long finish. This is most impressive though once again note well that this is going to require extended cellaring. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru leans more to the red fruit/pinoté side of the fruit spectrum on the nose, nicely detailed with fine delineation if not quite as intellectual as the Mazoyères-Chambertin. The palate is smooth, almost cashmere-like on the entry, the oak here seamlessly integrated, a seductive Clos de Bèze that gently fans out with ample spicy, menthol-tinged red fruit on the finish. It does not possess the bravura finish of the 2015 last year, but it's very succinct and it will age with style over the next 20 years. Drinking range: 2020 - 2038 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Gorgeous red fruit aroma - enticing. Succulent strike on the palate. It is ripe and generous and very fresh. Energetic and lithe with rippling satin texture. The finish pure and straight and very mineral. It’s a delightfully refined finish. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 19.85 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
